DHL global hub to handle N. Asia traffic
GLOBAL express giant DHL will start operating a US$175 million global hub in Shanghai in the first half of next year to handle goods from North Asia.
The 8,800 square-meter facility located in the West Cargo Area at Pudong International Airport will complement its Central Asia hub in Hong Kong to serve China's two important economic regions - Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta.
The new hub will be able to sort 40,000 pieces of packages an hour in the initial stage, DHL said at a news conference in Hong Kong yesterday.
The Yangtze River Delta accounts for almost 35 percent of China's total value of imports and exports.
"We opened two global hubs in China to support the huge cargo demand here and the two facilities will work together to help us save time, shorten distance and save money," Ken Allen, chief executive officer of DHL Express, said.
Rivals Fedex and UPS also have their global hubs in China.
