Domestic airlines to raise fuel surcharges

PASSENGERS flying on domestic routes will have to pay higher fuel surcharges from Wednesday as airlines seek to offset the rising fuel costs.

Fuel surcharges on routes longer than 800 kilometers will be raised to 130 yuan (US$20.49) from 100 yuan, and those on shorter routes will climb to 70 yuan from 50 yuan, domestic airlines said today.

Children will also pay a higher surcharge of 60 yuan, up 10 yuan, for domestic routes longer than 800 kilometers, and 30 yuan for shorter routes.

The current fuel surcharge rates are among the lowest on record due to lower jet fuel prices since the National Development and Reform Commission and the Civil Aviation Administration of China adopted a new surcharge system last November.

The new adjustment was prompted by a rise in domestic jet fuel prices and a rise in the benchmark price of Singapore jet kerosene, according to the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner.

Last November the NDRC and CAAC revised the system for fuel surcharges so that airlines could adjust them only when the ex-factory price fluctuates more than 250 yuan per ton.
