Domestic support keeps jet costs down

EUROPEAN aircraft manufacturer Airbus will deliver 36 China-assembled A320 jets this year with 80 percent of the wings supplied locally as the company tries to lower costs.

Tianjin-based Airbus Final Assembly Line China has delivered 51 A320 jets to 10 Chinese carriers since it began operation in 2008. That number is likely to grow to more than 100 planes by the end of 2012, the company said in a statement yesterday.

"The Tianjin factory has attached importance to the selection of Chinese suppliers to reduce cost and shorten delivery time. Besides fixture, dragging equipment and auxiliary power systems have been supplied locally," said Xu Gang, chairman of the Tianjin factory.

Among the 36 planes to be delivered this year, 28 planes will be equipped with wings supplied by AVIC Xi'an Aircraft Industry (Group) Co. AVIC Xi'an Aircraft is Airbus' first wing supplier for A320 jets outside Europe.

The factory, Airbus' first assembly line outside Europe, is a joint venture between Airbus and a Chinese consortium comprising Tianjin Free Trade Zone and Aviation Industry Corp of China.
