Dunkirk eyes Chinese trade with projects
The French port of Dunkirk will open a 160-hectare logistics park in 2016 and extend its container terminal to meet growing business from China, port officials told a media briefing in Shanghai yesterday.
The logistics park and another new 150-hectare area dedicated to industrial companies are expected to serve growing trade and investments that may arise from China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative, said Stephane Raison, CEO of Dunkirk Port.
The port’s container terminal will be extended by the end of 2017 to allow two container vessels capable of carrying 20,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) to dock simultaneously.
In 2013, China Merchant Holding International became the majority shareholder of the operator of Dunkirk’s container terminal.
The port will also commission a terminal for liquefied natural gas capable of handling 13 billion cubic meters annually. The capacity volume, roughly 20 percent of the annual consumption of natural gas in France and Belgium, will make it the largest terminal of its kind in mainland Europe.
Raison said the new projects aim at improving logistics facilities. The port will invest 39.3 million euros (US$43 million) this year, up 23 percent from 32.01 million euros in 2014.
