Event to help Chinese shipyards
CHINESE shipyards are encouraged to promote their competitiveness at an international shipping exhibition in Greece in 2012.
N. Vokos, chairman of the Posidonia International Shipping Exhibition, one of the world's biggest maritime events to be held in Greece next year, also said this is the best time for the Chinese shipyards to show the world their competitive strengths. He urged global customers to place their orders now for ships to be built as the world economic slowdown has kept prices very low.
"The current prices to purchase a ship are up to 30 percent less expensive than that in 2008 when the financial crisis started," Vokos said. "With the United States looking at trade to boost its economy, shipping will bounce back to prosperity around 2015. So it's best time to orders right now."
China is now one of the major shipbuilders for Greek shippers, along with South Korea and Japan.
China is enhancing closer cooperation with Greece in shipping. Last year, Cosco Pacific, a terminal operating subsidiary under the Cosco Group, took over long-term operations at the Port of Piraeus, the biggest Greek container port under a US$4.2 billion contract.
Greece has more than 1,000 shipping firms that own 12 percent of the world's maritime fleet, and Greek ships move 17 percent of global oil.
