Growth in air travelers slows
THE growth in air passengers moderated in China last month as a slower recovery in the global economy, unrest in north Africa and the Japanese disasters affected travel, according to China's civil aviation regulator.
Chinese airlines flew 22.82 million passengers in March, a 5 percent rise from a year earlier and a slowdown compared with a 6.8 percent annual increase in February, the Civil Aviation Administration of China said yesterday.
"Passenger volume on international routes dropped 3.1 percent from a month earlier because of unrest in Middle East and north Africa as well as the Japanese earthquake," the CAAC said.
The China-Japan route saw a 14.1 percent decline in passengers in March from a year earlier, but cargo volume jumped 23.5 percent, helped by the transport of relief and emergency goods.
In March, total cargo volume soared 62.7 percent on a monthly basis and rose 2 percent on an annual basis to 489,000 tons, against an 11.8 percent annual drop in February.
"Cargo volume slumped dramatically in February because many domestic factories were shut down during the Spring Festival holiday. However, the air cargo market recovered this month with the resumption of production," the CAAC said.
The civil aviation industry, including airlines and airports, earned 2.37 billion yuan in profit last month, a drop of 27.2 percent from a year earlier. But revenue gained 19.1 percent to 36.96 billion yuan.
