HK sees growth in air traffic in August
BENEFITING from robust demand during the traditional summer peak season, aircraft movements at Hong Kong International Airport in August reached a monthly high of 27,135, up 14.5 percent from a year ago, the Airport Authority Hong Kong said yesterday.
The daily average aircraft movements also set a new record of 880 in August. Passenger and cargo volumes rose 9.2 percent and 17 percent year on year to 4.7 million and 346,000 tons, respectively.
For the passenger market, Hong Kong residents and visitors grew by double digits year on year in August, increasing 19 percent and 12 percent respectively. Passenger traffic to or from the Chinese mainland and southeast Asia continued to perform particularly well among all major regions.
August also saw strong demand for cross-boundary land and sea transport at the airport, which both set a record monthly high. The number of passengers using the SkyPier ferry terminal to travel between the Pearl River Delta region and the airport rose an annual 33 percent. Passengers using cross-boundary coach and limousine services jumped 41 percent over August last year.
"These figures further affirm the airport's status as a multi-modal transport hub and a preferred gateway to the Chinese mainland with great connectivity to the Pearl River Delta region," said Stanley Hui Hon-chung, CEO of the airport authority.
Hui anticipated traffic in the coming months to continue growing as travel usually peaks at year-end, and in particular, during major festivals or holidays such as the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day holidays.
For the first eight months of this year, the airport handled a cumulative total of 33.9 million passengers, up 10.3 percent, and 2.7 million tons of cargo, a rise of 30.9 percent.
