Jet-engine base begins construction

THE engine supplier for China's jumbo jet project kicked off construction of its research and development base today in Shanghai's Minhang District.

The base, covering 300,000 square meters, is expected to be finished in 2013 with an investment of 3.23 billion yuan (US$493.3 million), AVIC Commercial Aircraft Engine Co said today.

It will house the company's headquarters, a R&D center, an airworthiness center, an international project center, an international communications center, client service center and apartments for professionals.

"The center can host 3,000 staff upon completion and we will recruit global professionals," said AVIC's general manager Zhang Jian.

The manufacturer will mainly research engines for China's domestically made 150-seat jet project, codenamed C919, in the base. But in the future, it is also likely to research engines for larger jets, Zhang said.
