Kaohsiung on Spring’s network

Spring Airlines will operate a direct flight between Shanghai and Kaohsiung late this month, becoming the first budget airline to fly between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland, the carrier said yesterday.

The airline will fly three times a week between the two cities using Airbus 320 aircraft from October 27.

“We plan to add more flights on the Shanghai-Kaohsiung route soon and open another direct flight to Taipei late this year,” said Wang Zhenghua, the airline’s chairman.

A return flight from Pudong International Airport costs about 1,500 yuan (US$245) including fuel surcharges and taxes, about 30 percent below the prices on China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines, said Zhang Wu’an, Spring’s spokesperson.

Spring has sold 80 percent of the tickets of the maiden flight, according to Wang.
