Landing scares ground Chinese jet

CHINA’S MA-60 passenger aircraft has been grounded following two scares involving landing gear this month.

The Xi’an Aircraft Industry Co has applied to the Civil Aviation Administration of China for the twin-engined turboprop to be withdrawn from service until engineers conduct checks.

“The company will not resume services until the safety of the landing gear can be fully assured,” Xi’an Aircraft Industry, part of the Aviation Industry Corp of China, said in a statement on its website.

On Tuesday, an Okay Airways MA-60 carrying 38 passengers and five crew from Tianjin circled the Shenyang airport in Liaoning Province for over two hours after a faulty instrument indicated a landing gear problem.

As it circled, ground staff confirmed that the landing gear had descended. The flight finally landed safely.

A preliminary investigation found the landing gear signaling system malfunctioned.

“Xi’an Aircraft Industry Co sincerely apologizes to passengers, airlines and other related parties for the inconveniences,” the company said.

On February 4, the nose wheel collapsed on a Joyair MA-60 carrying 37 passengers and seven crew as it taxied at the airport in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province.

No one was injured in the incident, attributed to too much weight on the nose wheel.

Xi’an Aircraft Industry had already launched an investigation into that incident.

The company, which makes many of China’s military aircraft, did not say how long the checks will take. It has also sent engineers to overseas clients to inspect their MA-60s. Buyers include airlines in Indonesia and South Africa.

The 50-seat MA-60 made its maiden flight in 2000, and more than 210 have been sold to 27 airlines in 16 nations. It is the only regional passenger aircraft designed and made in China in commercial service.
