Maritime sector sails ahead on new orders

CHINA’S maritime industry continues to sail ahead despite a slowing economy because new orders for domestic shipbuilders jumped in July, experts said in Shanghai yesterday.

Latest data showed that Chinese shipbuilders accepted new orders of 41 ships in July, up 94 percent from June and accounting for 38 percent of the world’s total orders in the month, Zhang Shengkun, expert at the State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering, said yesterday.

China currently holds the largest number of ship orders in the world. Chinese shipbuilders have been boosted by the “One Belt, One Road” trade initiative, as well as the “Made in China 2025” manufacturing scheme.

This year’s All China Maritime Conference and Exhibition in Shanghai will emphasize maritime safety and the use of robots in advanced shipbuilding, besides displaying traditional exhibits such as merchant ships and oceaneering equipment.

Zhang, also chairman of the event’s organizing committee, said high-tech vessels will be a key product in China’s maritime industry.

He said China State Shipbuilding Corp is teaming up with US-based Carnival Cruise Lines and Italian ship builder Fincantieri to build large luxurious cruise liners in China.

The event is expected to draw over 2,000 maritime companies from 23 countries and regions as well as more than 60,000 visitors.

The event, co-hosted by the Shanghai Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers and UBM Asia Ltd, will take place at the Shanghai New International Expo Center from December 1 to 4.
