Port aims for 1m tourists a year
SHANGHAI Wusongkou International Cruise Port will come into operation at the end of this year with an ultimate goal of receiving 1 million international travelers per year, officials from the operator said today.
The Wusongkou port, a part of Shanghai's ambition to turn into a global shipping hub, is also working with authorities and industry associations on developing a logistics center, training center, commercial centers and restaurants, said Lu Guangyuan, general manager of Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal Development Co.
The operator of the port also signed a Sister Port Agreement with Singapore Cruise Center Pte and co-initiated the Asian Cruise Port Association to help Asian cruise ports increase their influence around the globe.
"In face of competition from the world's cruise ports, an alliance among Asian ports will boost the regional development and push for the emerging Asian cruise center," said Cheong Teow Cheng, president of Singapore Cruise Center.
The agreement involves cooperation in five areas including talents training and preferential policies for cruise ships.
The first phase of the Wusongkou port will include a 100,000-ton cruise ship berth and a 200,000-ton cruise ship berth.
The second phase, to be completed in 2012, will house two 80,000-ton cruises.
