Pudong airport to get satellite terminal

SHANGHAI will build a new satellite terminal at the Pudong International Airport by 2015, the city's top planning body said yesterday.
The new building, to be named as S1 Terminal, will allow aircraft to park around its entire circumference, said the Civil Aviation Development Outline 2011-2015 issued by the Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission.
The city plans to expand the capacity of its two airports, the other being Hongqiao International Airport, to handle an estimated annual traffic of 100 million passengers and 5.5 million tons of cargos in 2015, when they will be among the world's busiest air hubs.
Under a former plan for the two airports, the Pudong facility was slated have two satellite terminals, three terminal buildings and five runways. It now has two terminal buildings and three runways.
The first airport to use a satellite terminal was London Gatwick Airport. Other airports having satellite terminals include London Heathrow Airport and Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris.
The outline said renovation at the Terminal-1 buildings at Pudong and Hongqiao airports will end soon. The aerobridges of the Terminal-2 building at Hongqiao airport will also be expanded by 2015, it said.
The Pudong airport is now building two more runways which will cost 9.4 billion yuan (US$1.5 billion), the Shanghai Airport Authority said.
