Richest village sets up aviation company
HUAXI Village, the richest village in China, has set up the country's first village-run general aviation company following approval from the civil aviation regulator, a top official of the company said yesterday.
The village in Jiangyin, east China's Jiangsu Province, last week established the 100 million yuan (US$15.7 million) aviation firm mainly to develop tourism, Li Qing, vice president of Jiangsu Huaxi General Aviation Co, told Shanghai Daily.
The company now has two helicopters and plans to buy three more and a business jet within three years, said Li.
"We set up the carrier to tap the booming travel demand in our village as more than 2 million tourists visit every year," Li said.
He said the helicopters and jet won't fly a fixed route but pick up high-end customers across China to visit the village. They can also be put to emergency use such as fire or medical treatment around the village.
The company's two helicopters bought from McDonnell Douglas and Eurocopter mainly provide villagers with a free ride as they take in a bird's-eye view of their hometown, said Zhu Minxin, the village press officer.
Huaxi has long been regarded as the richest village in China. The village-run Huaxi Group, parent of Shenzhen-listed Jiangsu Huaxicun Co, has total assets valued at 16 billion yuan.
The average annual income of a Huaxi villager was about 85,000 yuan in 2010, compared with about 32,000 yuan for a Shanghai resident.
