SAS starts direct Copenhagen flights
SCANDINAVIA Airlines System yesterday launched a new five-flight-a-week service between Shanghai and Copenhagen, Denmark, becoming the only airline to fly directly between the two cities.
The Prince Consort of Denmark, Prince Henrik, was among the first batch of passengers to be on the maiden flight from Copenhagen to Shanghai yesterday.
The Nordic region's largest airline expects to carry around 120,000 passengers a year on the new route, of whom 75 percent will come from Scandinavia and north Europe, said Rickard Gustafson, president and CEO of the SAS Group. The remaining 25 percent will be from Shanghai and east China.
A record-high number of Chinese tourists and business people visited Denmark in 2011. Denmark had 83,000 Chinese bed nights in 2011, or an 18 percent increase from 2010, according to official statistics released by the Danish Central Statistics Bureau.
"It clearly shows that in spite of a very challenging macro-economic environment, we are confident that the demand for more direct routes is going to be high," Lars Olofsson, SAS general manager of China, said in Shanghai yesterday.
A tourism industry forecast indicates that the number of Chinese tourists to Denmark from 2012 to 2020 will see an annual rise of 10-15 percent.
