Shenzhen Airlines Signs Star Alliance MoU
SHENZHEN Airlines yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with Star Alliance, becoming the second domestic airline to join the world's largest air alliance after its parent Air China.
The signing comes two weeks after China Eastern Airlines joined SkyTeam.
By joining Star Alliance, led by Lufthansa and Air Canada, Shenzhen Airlines will have access to 1,160 destinations in 181 countries and regions. The airline will help the alliance boost destinations in southern China.
However, the carrier needs to fulfill 87 requirements before becoming an official member. It is expected to join in the second half of next year.
Star Alliance now has 27 members that deliver more than 600 million passengers annually. Airline alliances seek to reduce costs by sharing offices, computer systems and other facilities.
Shenzhen Airlines, 51 percent held by Air China, plans to increase its fleet size to 171 aircraft by 2015 from 100.
