Slump sinks port cargo throughput
SHANGHAI'S cargo traffic sank more than 10 percent in 2009 as global trade was hit by the economic slump, the city's port operator said.
The city handled 25 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) last year, a fall of 10.7 percent from 28 million TEUs in 2008, Shanghai International Port Group said on its Website yesterday.
Shanghai's container throughput dropped 15.5 percent in the first half of 2009 from a year ago to 11.7 million TEUs. In December, its container traffic was 2.4 million TEUs, a rise of 26 percent from 1.9 million TEUs in January.
Shanghai handled a total of 365 million tons of dry bulk cargo in 2009, a slight 1.1 percent drop from 369 million tons in 2008. The dry goods traffic rose to 36.9 million tons in December, a 59 percent jump from 23.2 million tons in January.
