Taobao.com to auction aircraft today

Aircraft are now available for auction on Taobao.com, China’s largest e-commerce platform.

The company is holding an auction of six aircraft, including a Jabiru J160C training aircraft for which bidding starts at 1 yuan (16 US cents) and a Eurocopter EC120 Colibri helicopter with an auction price of 16.8 million yuan, at 10am today in conjunction with Sirenji.com, an aviation information website.

“Buying a plane online is not something new in some foreign countries, but in China only a small group of people can have the opportunity to buy aircraft due to various limits,” said a Taobao representative.

China is starting to support the use of private jets as the country’s growing super-rich are buying or leasing private aircraft as they seek to show off the ultimate success symbol.

The government plans to open airspace below 1,000 meters to general aviation flights in some regions. In another change, pilots now need a shorter period of time to submit their flight paths in advance.

China’s business jet sector is forecast to rise more than 10-fold to 2,590 jets in 2031, from 210 in 2011, according to Bombardier, a leading general aviation manufacturer.
