Test Flights For China's 1st A380 Plane

CHINA Southern Airlines will take delivery of the country's first Airbus 380 jet on October 15 as it aims to elevate its global competitiveness.

The Guangzhou-based carrier will initially fly the superjumbo, configured with eight seats in first class, 70 in business class and 428 in economy class, on the Beijing-Guangzhou route from October 17 to 26 and on Beijing-Shanghai route from October 27 to 29 in a test operation.

The jet, dubbed the world's biggest passenger aircraft, will then fly on international routes but China Southern, the largest carrier in Asia by fleet size and passenger turnover, has yet to announce the sectors.

"We have ordered five A380 from Airbus as a key step to shore up our competitiveness globally," Tan Wangeng, general manager of China Southern, said in Beijing yesterday.

Its second A380 jet is undergoing cabin refurbishment.
