Virgin Nigeria to stop long flights

VIRGIN Nigeria, a joint venture between Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd and local investors, said it will suspend long-haul flights on January 27 and review operations.

Flights from Lagos to London Gatwick airport and to Johannesburg will be halted, the airline said in a statement on its Website on Friday. England-based Virgin Atlantic is controlled by billionaire Richard Branson and 49-percent owned by Singapore Airlines Ltd, Bloomberg News said.

"The decision to suspend both services is to enable us to review our entire long-haul operations including our product offerings on these routes," Virgin Nigeria said.

During the review the airline will focus on "profitable domestic and regional flight operations," and afterwards it plans to return to long-haul routes, according to the statement.

Virgin Nigeria, which began operations in 2004, is 51-percent owned by Nigerian institutional investors and 49-percent by Virgin Atlantic.
