Waterway set to boost flow of commerce

THE successful completion of the Deep-water Navigation Channel at the mouth of the Yangtze River will spur the development of shipping and related industries, which is expected to generate 20 billion yuan (US$3.1 billion) in direct economic output by 2020 each year, officials of the Ministry of Communications and Transport said in Shanghai yesterday.

During a trial service last year, the cargo turnover at the mouth of the Yangtze River rose to 910 million tons from 220 million tons in 2000 because larger ocean containers could pass through, ministry officials said.

The project has boosted cargo and shipping traffic, resulting in approximately 80 billion yuan in economic benefits for the city and related industries in the past 13 years since dredging started, according to a study done by the Shanghai Maritime University.

The officials said they are confident that by 2020, the deep-water channel will yield 20 billion yuan annually in direct economic output.

The waterway may be extended to Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, by 2015, they said yesterday.
