Entrepreneurs’ home thoughts from abroad
CHENGDU will be receiving more than 3,000 Chinese entrepreneurs from over 100 countries and regions when the 12th World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention opens in the capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province next month.
The three-day event, a biennial conference initiated by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1991, has been gaining its reputation as a world event for Chinese entrepreneurs as it offers a global platform for them to strengthen economic cooperation and promote communication and understanding.
“Chengdu is really honored to become the second Chinese mainland city to host the event following Nanjing, capital of eastern Jiangsu Province, which attracted nearly 5,000 participants from over 70 countries to the conference in 2001,” Cai Xiaojun, director of Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Chengdu Municipality, told Shanghai Daily in an exclusive interview.
“It is our hope that by being a host of the WCEC, Chengdu will be able to garner more attention from overseas Chinese entrepreneurs from around the world and further accelerate its pace of globalization and modernization process as it moves toward a long-term goal building itself into a world-class ecological city, or a Garden City, a concept which was first proposed by Britain’s Ebenezer Howard more than a century ago.”
This year’s World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention is jointly sponsored by the China Overseas Chinese Entrepreneurs Association and the Chengdu municipal government, with the support of the All-China Federation of Industry & Commerce, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the Sichuan provincial government.
The entrepreneurial convention will run from September 24 to 26 and utilize the theme of “China’s Development and the Opportunities of Chinese Entrepreneurs,” the event’s organizing committee said.
According to the agenda, the convention will include a main forum on China’s economy and a series of special forums, economic and trade negotiations, product exhibitions as well as business visits, according to Ren Qiliang, office director of the organizing committee, who is also vice director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office.
It is estimated that around 3,000 delegates — roughly two-thirds from overseas and the rest from within the country — will participate in this year’s convention.
“Though the Chengdu conference will not be the largest of its kind by number of participants, we expect it to leave the greatest impact on the international community of overseas Chinese entrepreneurs because over 100 countries and regions are expected to be represented in this year’s conference, which will be the most in WCEC’s history,” Ren said.
“We will not only send invitations to overseas Chinese entrepreneurs from places like Southeast Asia and North America, where the older generations of overseas Chinese have been clustered, but more importantly, open our arms to welcome the newer generations of overseas Chinese who are from regions like eastern Europe, South America and Africa.”
While the main purpose of the event is to introduce Chengdu to more Chinese entrepreneurs and business groups from around the world, the city is also seeing the conference as a golden opportunity to attract potential investors as well as promote cooperation between the city and overseas Chinese business communities to further boost the development of its economy, Cai said.
“We welcome overseas Chinese business people and groups from all industries, particularly those in electronic information, automobiles, modern pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, modern service industries and agriculture business,” Cai said.
WCEC has been convened every two years since 1991 in cities including Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Vancouver, Melbourne, Nanjing, Kuala Lumper, Seoul, Osaka and Manila.
