Huaxiba carries on with medical legacy
EDITOR’S note:
Famed as the home of the panda, Chengdu, capital of China’s southwestern Sichuan Province, is a city going places. It gains growing reputation as a major business center. Much of this success can be attributed to the city’s dynamic “can-do” attitude, helping create an environment where industry can prosper and where leading multinationals are choosing to set up headquarters.
Located in Huaxiba of Chengdu City, the West China Hospital has advanced medical technology, state-of-the-art medical equipment and powerful scientific research capability. Its predecessor, the West China Union University, was the country’s first comprehensive medical university.
Founded in 1910, it has been a pioneer in medical care, combining both Western and Chinese medicine to help its patients over the decades. It has earned a good reputation in the health care industry.
In 2000, it was integrated into Sichuan University and its name was changed to the West China Medical Center of Sichuan University.
Now the center occupies over 73 hectares with five colleges and four affiliated hospitals. It has 16 majors for undergraduates, 71 master’s degree programs and 55 doctoral programs. It has 4,479 medical undergraduates, 2,600 post-graduates, 968 doctoral candidates and over 400 overseas students. There is one China Academy of Sciences academician, 12 members of the Thousand Talents Program and four chief scientists of the 973 Program among its teaching staff. Its R&D fund had amounted to 330 million yuan (US$52.92 million) as of 2012.
Of its four affiliated hospitals, West China Hospital is the country’s biggest with 4,300 beds. In 2012, the affiliated hospitals received 6.37 million outpatients, 250,000 inpatients and performed more than 140,000 operations.
West China Medical Center will continue with its historic mission to train professionals in the country and make further medical breakthroughs.
