14 sites join relics list
FOURTEEN heritage sites in Hangzhou have joined the national list of key relics under state protection, including the 10 Scenes of the West Lake, Baochu Pagoda and Lingyin Temple's stone pagodas and stone pillars inscribed with Buddhist scriptures.
The 10 Scenes of the West Lake date from the Southern Song Dynasty (960-1279), when Hangzhou was the capital. They became famous after Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) wrote their names in an inscription when he visited Hangzhou in 1699.
The State Council, China's cabinet, updated the protection list last week. It is the seventh edition and contains 1,943 heritage sites across the country. Of the 14 heritage sites in Hangzhou, eight are in urban districts and the rest in rural suburbs. To date, the city has 38 entries in the national list of key heritage sites.
