36% hike in traffic
MORE than 2.3 million vehicles were recorded on the highways in and around Hangzhou during the seven-day Chinese Lunar New Year holiday - a 35.7 percent rise over the same period last year.
Chinese New Year fell on an earlier date in 2012.
About 2 million cars and vehicles with no more than seven seats traveled toll-free during the holiday, according to government figures.
Last Friday, the final day of the weeklong holiday, heavy traffic forced toll gates on highways from Anhui Province to Hangzhou to close at 7pm.
On the same day, the Xiaoshan International Airport received 74,000 passengers, a record number for the airport. A total of 405,000 people departed from or arrived at the airport during the holiday.
