690 traffic deaths
Traffic accidents claimed 690 lives last year in Hangzhou, 21 fewer than in 2012. Among them, 163 people were killed in accidents involving electric mopeds, or 23.6 percent of the total, according to police.
The number of accidents involving motorcycles and trucks also rose, but drunken driving, speeding and running red light cases decreased. The number of drunk driving arrests fell by half to 48.
In addition to the 690 deaths, 2,806 people were injured in 2,679 traffic accidents that resulted in 7.2 million yuan (US$1.2 million) in direct losses, police said. At the end of last year, the city had 1.12 million cars in its urban area but only 427,400 parking spaces.
The shortfall of nearly 700,000 parking spaces is the main cause of congestion and illegal parking. Last month police launched a crackdown on illegal parking, towed away 2,655 cars and slapped 83,857 tickets on illegally parked cars. Police vowed to continue the crackdown, add 50 crossroads in downtown streets, and forbid parking within 300 meters of crossroads.
