Academy art triple bill

THE leading university of art in China, the China Academy of Art at Hangzhou, raised the curtain on its historic exhibition series "The Way of China Academy of Art" last Friday with an impressive initial show "A Tribute to the Garden of Sunflower - Exhibition of Xu Jiang's Works."

Xu Jiang is the president of the school, and the large-scale exhibition series also involves two other shows - "East Meets West: Wu Guanzhong Retrospective Exhibit" and "Joint Exhibit of Lin Fengmian and His Students."

Lin Fengmian was the founder of the academy, and Wu Guanzhong, who graduated from the university, was one of the most notable contemporary Chinese painters. He passed away in June. One of his paintings was sold for 57.12 million yuan (US$8.6 million) in an auction earlier this year.

From Xu's show, to Wu's and then Lin's, the series goes backward in time to narrate the history of the China Academy of Art from 1928 to 2010.

"The China Academy of Art has taken the responsibility to cultivate talent in Chinese art in modern times, so the way of the college is also the way of the development of Chinese modern education of fine arts," says Xu.

Xu, the 55-year-old artist, has created a great number of works around the sunflower since 2005, and the show, his first solo exhibition in Hangzhou, displays more than 200 of his oil paintings, watercolor paintings and sculptures all featuring sunflowers.

Xu took half a year to create a large sculpture made by glass fiber-reinforced plastics, which is now placed at the center of the hall to welcome visitors.

The sculpture, named "Is Symbiosis Possible," features more than 800 pieces of 4.5-meter-tall sunflowers and lotuses, indicating a harmonious mutualism between sunflowers grown from the earth and lotuses grown from water. Visitors can even talk to the flowers through their large toruses.

In the exhibition, some artworks are merged with several lines of his poems and articles about sunflowers, ensuring visitors have an all-around impression of the artist.
