Acquatic weeds

HANGZHOU water authorities are planting aquatic weeds to absorb oscillatoria, an algae that blooms in West Lake this spring.

They said the growth of oscillatoria is a sign of good water quality. This alga thrives at the bottom of the lake. Clear water allows sunlight to penetrate and stimulate the photosynthesis of oscillatoria.

Oxygen produced in photosynthesis bubbles up and brings oscillatoria to the surface.

Although it is good for the water, floating oscillatoria mars the view of West Lake and tourists tend to think it is polluted. Therefore, authorities decided to grow underwater plants to solve the problem.

Since 2009, 118,000 square meters of the West Lake area have been planted with aquatic weeds that compete with oscillatoria for sunlight and nutrients, thus stifling the growth of algae.
