Affordable homes

HANGZHOU will build 131,000 affordable homes in major downtown areas by the end of 2015, according to the city's 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015).

The government is seeking to ensure that affordable housing will account for about 30 percent of total commercial housing each year under the plan.

The city plans to develop 9.5 million to 10.83 million square meters of commercial houses within five years, 4.5 million to 5.83 million square meters of which will be in major downtown districts.

By 2015, 60 percent of commercial houses in major downtown areas will be required to be decorated before occupants move in.

Expo fireworks

The grand fireworks show at the annual West Lake International Expo on October 13 will be moved back to West Lake, the organizers said at a press conference in Shanghai on Monday.

Last year, the fireworks show at the expo was held at Xianghu Chengshan Square in Hangzhou's Xiaoshan District.

The international exhibition this year will be an extravaganza of 97 programs, including fireworks shows, photography contests, fashion shows, concerts and sports competitions.

The awards ceremony of the China International Press Photo Contest will be held in Hangzhou on October 18, said the expo organizers.

Launched in 1929 but suspended for a number of years, the West Lake Expo was revived by the local government in 2000 and has been held every year since.

In the past 11 years, about 150 million visitors have attended the exposition, with trade volume totaling more than 130 billion yuan (US$20.6 billion).

This year's expo festivities will be extended for the first time to 10 other cities in Zhejiang Province, plus to Fengjing Town in Shanghai, Kunshan in Jiangsu Province, Huizhou in Anhui Province and Tieling in Liaoning Province.

Porcelain on display

A museum housing a private porcelain collection of more than 1,200 items dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) has opened to public on Hanghai Road.

"I wished to set up the museum for the enjoyment of both art professionals and ordinary citizens," said Yu Youming, owner of the Hangzhou Tuhuozhai Ancient Porcelain Museum.

Yu has amassed his collection from auction houses around the world. All of the exhibits have been authenticated by the Zhejiang Cultural Relic Appraisal Office.

The museum is open, free of charge, from 9am to 5pm daily, except Mondays.

Antiques festival

Art collectors in Hangzhou have an opportunity to see all kinds of antiques at the 11th Yuewang Art City Collection Festival that began last Friday.

Exhibits include zisha teapots dating from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), amber jewelry from Poland along with paintings and calligraphy work by Chinese and South Korean artists.

The 10-day festival ends on Sunday. Yuewang Art City is at 11 Renhe Road in Shangcheng District.

Talent rewards

Binjiang District authorities awarded three leading professionals 1 million yuan (US$158,730) each as part of a plan to attract more talented professionals and promote technology innovation.

Fan Yuan, technology director of Hangzhou DBAPP Security Co; Luo Huan, general manager of Hangzhou Glority Software Co; and Tan Nianneng, chairman and technology director of Vango Technologies Inc, were among 24 leading professionals to make the district's list.

The program, which was launched in 2008, aims to attract 1,000 top-level Chinese professionals from overseas.

In addition, the district has invested 120 million yuan to help overseas professionals start 77 businesses.

Green museum

Visitors can take a bamboo raft to explore cities, melting glaciers, sun-scotched lands and extreme weather conditions in the newly built Hangzhou Low-Carbon Science and Technology Museum.

It is the first museum in the country to take low-carbon society and low-carbon technology as its themes.

The museum has seven showrooms, two cinemas, a conference hall and several laboratories.
