Air terminal
THE new international terminal of Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport has started its trial operation and is expected to open fully next week.
The 670-million-yuan (US$98.7 million) facility can handle more than 3.8 million passengers a year. It is expected to handle a maximum of 1,020 passengers an hour in peak periods.
The 96,000-square-meter facility can accommodate 18 parked aircraft and contains a special air bridge for connecting to the Airbus A380.
Chinese-designed high-speed baggage screening equipment can handle 1,800 pieces of luggage an hour, twice as many as equipment previously in use.
Land sales
Hangzhou land sales for the past six months hit a record of 25 billion yuan (US$3.6 billion), compared with 11.5 billion yuan during the same period last year.
The rising prices of housing in mid-April spurred land sales in the booming real estate market. Sales are expected to fall in the second half of the year as China's new tax policies take effect. They are aimed at cooling the property market.
Free funerals
To promote cremation instead of burial, Hangzhou funeral parlors will give free funeral services this month, including transport, cold storage, cremation and depositing of ashes.
This marks the second revolution in Hangzhou since the first one in the 1980s that promoted cremation over burial in a nation where burial is a tradition but land is scarce.
Hangzhou is believed to be the first Chinese city to launch the free funeral service.
Four categories of people are eligible. They include local residents with Hangzhou City hukou (permanent residence), college students, active-duty soldiers based in Hangzhou and migrant workers holding contracts with Hangzhou enterprises and paying pension fund for more than one year.
New facility
Construction has started on a huge underground multi-use facility near the transport hub close to Hangzhou Railway Station.
The 50,000-square-meter facility will contain shopping areas, passenger walkways under major roads, a 400 to 500-space parking lot and other conveniences.
It will be able to accommodate around 50,000 people. It will extend 1.3 kilometers from Beitang Road N. to Xitang Road S., and will be 36 meters wide and almost 4 meters high.
A 20,000-square-meter park will be built above the facility in the next construction phase. The total investment is 425 million yuan (US$62.6 million). The first part of the project is scheduled to be completed next June.
College aid
College students from needy families can apply for education subsidies of 2,000 yuan (US$295) to 5,500 yuan each semester.
Students from families with Hangzhou Poor Family Aid Certificate and Low Income Certificate are eligible.
The application requires a student identification card, the ID card of the family head, the Hangzhou Poor Family Aid Certificate, and written materials from the college.
Freshman-to-be this September also needs to provide the college's admission letter.
World Choir
The sixth World Choir Games will open on July 15 in Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province.
More than 20,000 singers are expected to take part in the 11-day event, said organizers in Hangzhou. The event will involve 8,000 foreign singers from more than 60 countries and regions and more than 14,000 choir singers from China.
Known as the "Olympics of Choral Singing," the event will feature 500 competitions and nearly 100 concerts.
It is cosponsored by the Shaoxing municipal government and Interkultur, an international organization dedicated to choral competitions and festivals.
This is the second time the biennial games will be held in China. The first time was in 2006 in Xiamen, Fujian Province. The last games were held in Graz, Austria.
To the rescue
Domestic rescue teams will compete in an emergency outdoor rescue tournament from July 23 to 25 at Zhexi Grand Canyon, Lin'an.
Sixteen teams from around China will take part in the first such national competition. As outdoor sports like hiking and rafting are increasingly popular, the number of accidents is also increasing. But many new outdoor sports lovers do not know enough about safety and there needs to be a better emergency response.
