Aliyun鈥檚 data center

Aliyun, the cloud computing division of Alibaba, last week inaugurated its data center by Qiandao Lake, west of Hangzhou.

The data center will draw lake water from a depth of 60 meters and at 17 degrees Celsius to cool its 50,000 servers. This can save the electricity equivalent of 10,000 tons of coal every year. Aliyun also has data centers in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Qingdao and plans to set up data centers in Singapore and Germany. Water from the data center will be returned to the lake.
