Amateur shutterbug shines a light on people
THE spirit of Abraham Lincoln seemingly haunts the Hangzhou Citizen Photography Festival.
To borrow and alter one of Lincoln’s most famous quotes, the festival showcases photos of people, taken by people, for people.
Ren Xian, 66, who is retired, has had photos selected for display at the annual festival since 2008. His pictures always focus on the city’s residents.
This year, his lens zooms in on people doing morning exercises around West Lake.
“I have a strong attachment to West Lake,” said Ren, who lives nearby. He picked up photography as a hobby after retiring to help pass the time.
Ren said he likes to walk around the lake every morning with his Canon 50D camera.
“I only take photos that are natural and real,” he added. “I don’t like posing.”
His morning exercise series was shot in black-and-white so he could place more emphasis on the people.
In one photo an old man tries to do the splits. A young man jogs in the snow in another. There’s also a group of pictures of people doing tai chi.
Ren didn’t say what he plans for next year’s festival, but no doubt it will feature more of the city’s amazing people.
Ren’s photos are on display atthe Z Pavilion of Hangzhou Library through June 30.
