Ancient bridge plea

A history expert in Hangzhou is calling on local authorities to halt a project that would resite a bridge believed to have been built in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) or even earlier.

The stone arch Yaodoumen Bridge is under threat in an expansion project involving the Hangzhou East Railway Station.

It has borne silent witness to the city's history and its historical value will be ruined if it is moved and rebuilt, Chen Hui, cultural expert with Zhejiang University, said.

The bridge on Jichang Road served as a stop for messengers on horseback carrying military information and was part of a centuries-old water control project.

There was once a sluice gate in the lower part of the bridge.

"Yaodoumen Bridge will be no different from other bridges if it is lost to urban sprawl and rebuilt elsewhere," Chen said.

He has written to local authorities calling for the planned project to be abandoned.
