Animation alliance

THE China International Cartoon and Animation Festival signed a strategic partnership agreement with Shanghai Animation Film Studio in Hangzhou this week.

Through the partnership, the Hangzhou cartoon industry will join with the best animation studio on the Chinese mainland to make an animated film "Juvenile Yue Fei." Yue was a famous military general and patriot during the Southern Song Dynasty (960-1279).

The film is expected to debut during the 11th China International Cartoon and Animation Festival in April.

Meanwhile, Shanghai Animation Film Studio donated a precious manuscript of the first cartoon made in China to the China Cartoon and Animation Museum, which is currently being built in Hangzhou.

Tree-planting boost

Hangzhou plans to set up a carbon fund to encourage more efforts in tree planting.

According to the plan made by Hangzhou Forestry Administration, 68 percent of Hanghzou will be covered in trees totaling 50 million cubic meters of wood by 2020.

The forests have the capacity of consuming 9 million tons of carbon dioxide a year.

Hangzhou bills itself as the "cleanest city in China" and adopts measures to become a low-carbon, environment-friendly city in aspects of economy, construction, transportation and lifestyle.

One hundred families in Hangzhou were randomly selected by a computer to plant trees along the Shangtang River tomorrow to mark weddings or the birth of children.

They will plant magnolia, double camellia, plum and gingko trees in Chengbei Sports Park in Xiacheng District. Each tree planted will cost between 50 yuan (US$7.5) and 150 yuan.

The organizer hopes the activity will convince others to celebrate special days by planting trees.

The Hangzhou Urban Management Office has received 538 telephone calls and 122 e-mails from people applying to plant trees.

Cartoon students

Three primary school children in Hangzhou have been accepted as students by three master cartoonists.

Tsai Chih Chung, a famous cartoon master from Taiwan, chose Cai Herui as his student. Famous cartoonist Yao Feila of Hangzhou opted to teach Wu Liuting while Nie Jun selected Xu Jin as his student.

The masters will use a combination of e-mail, telephone and face-to-face lectures to teach their students in the future.

Methanol power

Methanol-blended gasoline will be available in some gas stations in downtown Hangzhou from the middle of next month.

Methanol gasoline is about 8 percent cheaper than petrol and it produces less emissions. Also, the technology used to produce methanol gasoline is mature, so drivers don't need to worry about using it in their vehicles.

Methanol, which can be derived from coal, coal-bed methane and coke-oven gas, is widely used in China.

Methanol gasoline is now in use at some private gas stations in Quzhou, Huzhou in Zhejiang Province, as well as Jiande in Hangzhou.

Cycle assistance

Hangzhou has set up a number of touch screens to help residents and visitors rent or park bikes more efficiently.

People enter key words on the screen to determine their location and then find out where the nearest public bike service point is and how many bikes are available. The screen will also give information about the weather, bus lines, dining, travel and entertainment.

The multimedia touch screens were first installed around the West Lake and shopping malls. By the end of this year, 200 screens will be put into use, and more will cover the city next year, said an official from the public bike company. Hangzhou has a well-developed bicycle renting system. Altogether there are over 2,080 public bicycle stations with 52,800 bikes in the city's eight districts. Almost 250,000 people rent bikes each day on average, the highest number rented in one day is 322,000.
