Annual event vital to city growth

The 12th West Lake International Expo, which functions as "a platform for developing the convention and exhibition industry and a festival for people from home and abroad," will be held from October 16 to November 6 in Hangzhou.

The first West Lake International Expo was successfully held in Hangzhou in 1929. However, no one could have anticipated the city would wait 71 years for the second event.

For some long-forgotten reasons, the West Lake Expo stopped at the beginning and as time passed it seemed to disappear from the community's priority.

But things changed 71 years later as Hangzhou built up its Zhejiang World Trade Center, a comprehensive, multifunctional exhibition building with modern facilities and high-end services, including a five-star hotel and a grand exhibition hall of over 12,800 square meters.

With the ideal hardware in place, city leaders began thinking of holding a grand international expo, and in the history books they found a model they could follow.

In 1999, Hangzhou government starting preparations for the revitalized West Lake Expo 2000.

Although the first one took place in 1929, even before foundation of the People's Republic of China, the West Lake Expo 2000 was still titled No. 2 in the line of events. And since its resurgence, the West Lake Expo has been held every year, last year's being the 11th. Focusing on city characteristics, the extensive event has taken full advantage of Hangzhou's industrial profile and lifestyle appeal.

With 10 years' development, it has become an open platform of various elements - culture and art, tourism and leisure, exercise and fitness, financial investments, foreign affairs and communications, regional special industries, health and education, Internet and electronics, and history and humanity.

As a result of its integration of the city's extensive resources, the West Lake Expo is a crucial booster of Hangzhou's economic development. Pivoting around local industries, the 11th West Lake International Expo fully exploited the city's strength in industrial development and enhanced regional cooperation to boost its influence and popularity as well as encouraging globally focused conventions and exhibitions into the region.

In 2009, the West Lake Expo established four sub-venues - Anji, Shangyu, Zhuji and Deqing - and delegation teams were sent to various cities all over the country to publicize the event and draw exhibitors, delegates and patrons.

Known as one of the best tourism cities and a capital of Oriental leisure, Hangzhou enjoys rich tourism resources, and the 11th West Lake International Expo organized a series of tourism and leisure projects such as the West Lake International Fireworks Display, the West Lake Expo International Tourism Festival and introduced the PATA tourism trade fair.

All visitors and local participants in the event could not only enjoy natural attractions, but also sample different kinds of tourism activities in the city's unique environment.

The event also clustered the city's advantages in 10 leading cultural and creative industrial zones and eight well-developed industrial sectors.

Various activities such as China (Hangzhou) Cultural and Creative Industry Expo, a series of events in the International Cultural Exchange Year, China International Poster Biennial and Hangzhou West Lake Modern Music Festival took place during last year's Expo, playing a remarkable role in developing Hangzhou into a national center of cultural creativity.

To attract more high-profile sporting events, Hangzhou is also promoting the construction of sports facilities such as Olympic Sports Center and massing resources for sports activities. Meanwhile, it is also integrating and developing a series of leisure tourism products related to leisure sports, including arranging the activities of walking, skating and bicycle riding in scenic spots of West Lake and Xixi Wetland.

And during the 11th West Lake Expo, Hangzhou successfully held many sports events of international standard such as the Hangzhou International Marathon and the Manchester United 2009 Asia Tour-Hangzhou.

With more efforts underway, Hangzhou is integrating the concept of "quality of life" into the process of city construction.
