Art fair features something for almost everyone

THE Hangzhou Art Fair next month will feature something for almost everyone, including some big-name artists and not-so-big ones with prices as low as several dozen yuan to thousands of yuan.

The annual event’s people-oriented marketing strategy, built behind the slogan “Everybody is an artist,” includes thousands of pieces of art including oil paintings, ink paintings, pottery and installations.

Big names include Wu Guanzhong (1919-2010), one of the most renowned modern Chinese artists. Wu’s oil painting “Ten Thousand Li Up the Yangtze River” sold for a record-setting 149.5 million yuan (US$23.6 million) at an auction held by Beijing-based auction house A&F in 2011.

Another featured artist is Inoue Yu-Ichi (1916-1985), one of the most important Japanese artists and calligraphers of the 20th century.

Most pieces in the fair will be available for sale, and affordable items include art derivatives and student works.

“We expect more people will take art home, as we have witnessed a trend in which even ordinary Chinese families like to decorate their houses with art, instead of hanging their wedding photos on walls,” said Chen Xin, deputy director of the Hangzhou Culture, Radio, TV, News and Publications Bureau.

The fair is cosponsored by the bureau, the Hangzhou Cultural and Creative Industry Office, and Hangzhou Daily.

The four-day event combines a main exhibition, a gallery work and art derivative exhibition, and themed shows for woodblock painting, pottery, jewelry and glass artworks.

The fair covers 10,000 square meters, and its featured artists are from China, Japan, Russia and Bulgaria.

Salons, forums, and events to interact with artists also will be held.

Address: Zhejiang World Trade Exhibition Center,122 Shuguang Rd
