Artful vine creations

HANGZHOU native He Chuyi, an inheritor of traditional Chinese medicine, has gained popularity for a special skill — art on the vine.

He created a wall of vines shaped like the words “Hangzhou welcomes you” and “G20” as a way to celebrate the upcoming G20 Summit.

It took four months for He to grow and trim the vines into their current shape. All the vines are actually Chinese herbs. He created his first such work in 2008, when Beijing hosted the Summer Olympics. Using a batch of Chinese herbs, he composed a wall picture of vines for the event.

In recent years, He has created similar works for other big events and milestones, such as the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the 2010 Shanghai Expo, the 2013 World Environment Day, and the 70th anniversary of the victory of World Anti-Fascist War in 2015.
