Artistic reconstruction is complete
"RECONSTRUCTION," an exhibition of Chinese contemporary abstract art that has been a year in the making, finally raised its curtain last week at Zhejiang Art Museum.
As part of a series of Chinese contemporary abstract art exhibitions held by Beijing Jindu Art Center, one of the leading art centers in China, the exhibition asked 13 art critics to recommend and vote for artists to include in the show. From 60 candidates, 20 were eventually chosen.
It's hard to say whether those 20 artists represent the highest level of Chinese contemporary art, but they do reflect the current situation of Chinese contemporary abstract art.
According to its curator Rong Jian, the theme of "Reconstruction" stems from the idea that Chinese abstract art cannot duplicate Western abstract art. Therefore, the Chinese style is reconstructed by drawing from traditional, modern and post-modern art resources with new ideas and methods.
Yin Shuangxi, the academic host of the exhibition, said there is a dilemma of abstract art in modern China, lying in "the estrangement between elite artists and the masses." As a result, time is still needed for the masses to appreciate and collect abstract art.
The exhibition also involves a summit about Chinese abstract art.
The show will move to Today Art Museum in Beijing on December 18.
Date: through November 14
Venue: Zhejiang Art Museum, 138 Nanshan Rd
