Artistic visions of West Lake on show

A collection of 39 oil paintings on the theme "Sentiment of the West Lake" feature in an exhibition at the newly opened Hangzhou Qiantang Bay Museum of Art.

Organizers at the gallery, which lies on the banks of the Qiantang River, promise a visual feast for fans of classical art and the West Lake at the venue's first major show.

Admission is free and the exhibition runs until July 6.

The 39 paintings are the work of 37 artists, selected from 200 entries by a panel of experts.

Among those featured is Jin Shangyi, a well-known figure in contemporary Chinese oil painting.

Jin is famous for his painting "Young Singer," for which China's First Lady Peng Liyuan was the model.

Many of the paintings in the exhibition feature Hangzhou's renowned West Lake and its surroundings, famous for painting-like scenery.

The artists drew material chiefly from the surroundings of the West Lake, including Leifeng Pagoda and the Lotus Pool.

A highlight is a work by Russian artist A.A. Milnikov, depicting an ordinary scene. Milnikov visited Hangzhou twice, which made an indelible impression on him. He finished this painting a year before his death.

Many of the artists featured studied experiences in Hangzhou, recording their impressions of the city.

"They illustrated this sentiment thoroughly in these paintings," said Quan Shanshi, a member of the committee of experts and a professor at the China Academy of Art in Hanghzou.

The Hangzhou Qiantang Bay Museum of Art is located in the former Binjiang campus of China Academy of Art.

It sees itself as part of the academy's tradition.

"After bidding successfully for this land in 2008, I decided to build a museum to inherit the culture of the China Academy of Art," said museum curator Chen Yali.
