Asian film festival to include free screenings
The fifth Hangzhou Asian Film Festival will be held from October 18-26, and the list of finalists for the competition and the poster were released on Sunday.
Hangzhou Asian Film Festival (HAFF), run by a group of young Hangzhou university graduates, is a non-profit event that does not charge audiences to attend. Its main activity is a competition that recruits films from young Asian directors, including overseas Asians. So far only short films are accepted.
This year it has received 374 films from 32 countries and regions for the final competition, and on Sunday at Inna’s Contemporary Art Space it released the list of 15 finalists, of which the directors are from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Russia, Lebanon, Iraq and Poland.
HAFF also released its poster, which is a painting by local artist Chen Dongfan from Inna’s Contemporary Art Space, who created a camera-head man holding a speaker and a color palette, and beside the man is a cat holding a movie clapper board.
The image of the camera-man has been made into an actual-size sculpture, as the mascot of HAFF, named “Haff,” and small versions will be made as trophies for winners of the film competition.
The jury this year consists of renowned Chinese director Xie Fei, Japanese documentary director Kazuhiro Soda, and Park Kiyong, former head of Korean Academy of Film Arts who is now director of the Cinema Digital Seoul Film Festival.
Besides screening 15 movies for audiences, the film festival this year will also include events such as playing Asian-themed movies directed by French masters as well as New Wave southeast Asian cinema. In addition, public forums and lectures will be given free during the festival. Details can be checked on http://haff.asia/2013/zh/.
