Ban dates extended
world swimming ruling body FINA said the dates of the ban imposed on Ba Zhen, the doctor for Olympic swimming champion Sun Yang, have been extended.
Ba had been suspended for one year after Sun tested positive for the banned stimulant trimetazidine. During his suspension Ba was spotted assisting Sun, the world holder in the 1,500m, in September 2014 at the Asian Games, where the Chinese athlete won three gold medals.
The Chinese Swimming Association ordered that Ba’s suspension from swimming, which should have ended on May 16, will now be in effect until September 27, FINA said in a statement.
“The China Swimming Association has decided to recount the suspension period of this physician,” said FINA.
FINA said Ba violated the rules “by traveling on a private basis to the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon and by helping to rehabilitate his athlete during that competition. This was done without the previous knowledge or consent from Chinese National Swimming Team officials.”
“Therefore, doctor Ba Zhen is sanctioned with a new suspension period, this time from September 28, 2014, to September 27, 2015.”
