Bar options to quench the thirst of football fans

Football fans have barely recovered from the drama of the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final on May 19, when Chelsea's dogged resistance brought them penalty shoot-out victory over Bayern Munich.

Yet from tomorrow sports fans have another football feast on the menu as the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship kicks off in Poland and the Ukraine.

And even with the Poland six hours behind China and the Ukraine five hours behind, Chinese football fans still have Euro 2012 fever.

But if the prospect of watching a game at home is too boring, another option is going to a bar, grabbing a cold beer and sharing the excitement with other fans.

And Hangzhou has plenty of choice for football fans - with different types of bars offering different atmospheres.

Located on the 2nd floor of the south tower at the Chengshi Shenghuo Plaza on Wantang Road, 9 Club is famous for its snooker and pool and live music. It can seat up to 150 people.

During Euro 2012, matches will be shown on the big screen in the middle of the bar, with discounts on all drinks.

And to tie in with the football 9 clubs plans for musical acts almost every night.

If you prefer a more laid-back experience, near West Lake there are options on Shuguang Road.

Among those is You To Bar, which resembles a village bistro with its wooden tables, tall stools and performances by jazz bands.

Although the owner says not many people come especially to watch football, customers are attracted by the pleasant laid-back environment.

"Because most of the matches start at 2am, and people have to go to work, I guess the bar won't be filled with football fans," says the owner.

However, football fans will be able to catch the matches on five TVs in the bar.

Home to ancient Chinese river-street-style buildings, Xinyifang Commercial Street is a popular recreational area along the banks of the Yuhangtang River.

Many local residents visit bars here, and one predicting a roaring trade during the Euros is Shanke, which have been open for six years.

"I have experienced two World Cups, one Olympics and two Euros here and every time the bar has been full of sports fans," says the owner surnamed Li.

"People who live nearby, most of whom are regular customers, will come to watch the games."

Shanke will show every game on its flat screen TV inside plus the big screen on the pavement terrace.

"When the games in the latter stages are taking place, there is often no room for people to stand - football's very popular," says the owner.

In order to limit customer numbers, the owner has decided to raise the prices of the drinks slightly.

Even though it is European nations battling it out on the pitch, the Euros are very popular with Chinese fans.

Sports fans love to catch the action at bars with a group of friends because they say the atmosphere there is better.

As one Hangzhou football fan explains, it can be lonely sitting in front of the TV at home alone. "In the bar the screen is large, I can get excellent views, can discuss the game with the people nearby and shout out together."

However, the fan admits that the communal football experience also has its occasional downside.

"There are times when fans who support rival teams end up sitting together, and the atmosphere can be tense."

Featuring 16 nations, the Euro 2012 finals in Poland and the Ukraine take place between June 8 and July 1.
