Best in their fashion field
PINNACLES of achievement in fashion and styling arts were recognized this week at the Fashion Asia Awards ceremony 2009 in Hangzhou.
Twelve winners from a range of Asian countries were celebrated in fashion fields like hair styling, photography, makeup and modeling. Two China fashion artists won awards.
Among the 12 winners were Li Xiaoyan and Yi Ming from China. Li won the Asian Top Fashion Designer of the Year Award and Yi was recognized as the Asian Top Fashion Stylist of the Year.
Li has won numerous honors and helmed many fashion shows at Paris China Fashion Week. She has also designed fashion for big brands, like Rolls-Royce, Mercedes and BMW.
Judges commended Li that, as a designer using cotton, she always insists on adopting "green" principles and influences people to protect the environment.
They said she merges her enthusiasm for cotton with innovative design and the lifestyle she espouses matches global low-carbon trends, earning her immense recognition and respect.
Yi has long-term partnerships with Dior, Gucci and Armani and has been commissioned as chief designer for many international events, including the Beijing Olympic Games.
The judges commended him as a famous stylist who reshapes people's aesthetic consciousness and values.
The awards ceremony originated in 2006 and always has been staged in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. This is the first time it has been held in Zhejiang Province where it highlighted the creative industry and enhanced Hangzhou as a "fashion capital."
"In Singapore, people purchase clothing and materials from China, and many fashions are made in China. China is a fashion country and will be the leading one in Asia soon," says Carven Ong, a nominated Singapore fashion designer.
"So many international brands, like Prada, choose China to sell products, and it's interesting that Hangzhou, a smaller city than Shanghai and Beijing, also hosts many big fashion brands," says Frederick Lee, another nominated Singapore fashion designer.
