Better drug control

In addition to hospitals who have already stopped intravenous infusion of antibiotics to outpatients, 11 more hospitals in Hangzhou have vowed to stop with the common practice by July. The practice has been widely blamed for antibiotic resistance and the creation of “superbugs.”

The Hangzhou Health and Family Planning Administration said the 11 hospitals include Hangzhou People’s Hospital, Hangzhou Tumor Hospital, Hangzhou Red Cross Hospital, Hangzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Hangzhou Xixi Hospital, Hangzhou Maternity Hospital, Xiaoshan District TCM Hospital and Fuyang District TCM Orthopedics Hospital.

Patients who need antibiotics to cure diseases can seek treatment in the emergency department and the inpatient department.

Several hospitals have already stopped giving antibiotics to outpatients. Yuhang District People’s Hospital was the first to do so about two years ago, and many others followed suit.

China’s per capita use of antibiotics is nearly 10 times that of the United States. Chinese hospitals use antibiotics to treat cold and viral infections, but overuse can do harm to the nervous system and kidneys, and can cause resistance to the drugs.
