Body exhibition peels away the skin
The Human Body Exhibition provides a fascinating look under our skin from head to toe.
The exhibition has toured 36 countries and usually generates some heated conversations as human corpses are used as specimens. Some viewers are grossed out by the works while others are enthralled with what they see.
The Chinese name of the exhibition now in Hangzhou translates as “Hi Body.” On display are more than 200 bodies, organs and skeletons.
Full body specimens demonstrate how the body functions from the intricacy of the circulatory system to the astounding process of reproduction.
In most cases, the bodies are skinned with the muscle tissue, blood vessels and nerves exposed. Each body is fixed in a pose like jumping or running. The muscles that are being used in that pose appear red while the rest are white.
Individual organ specimens allow visitors to delve deeper into the body’s structures that operate within those systems. With a focus on health care and lifestyle, the exhibition calls on people to take care of their bodies.
Perhaps the best example is the display of two lungs, one of a long-time smoker and the other of a non-smoker. The smoker’s lung is dark and dirty while the other looks red and healthy. Next to the lungs is a sign that says, “Daddy, please stop smoking.”
Fathers are encouraged to sign their name as a promise to quit smoking.
Specimens of aborted fetuses and deformed babies are also on display.
Medical docents are available to answer questions as visitors explore the galleries.
