Buddhist murals
The 60 paintings that Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) copied meticulously from Buddhist murals in the Mogao grottoes in Dunhuang, northwestern Gansu Province, have arrived at Zhejiang Art Museum.
Zhang, an eminent Chinese painter, made the replica paintings from 1941 to 1944. During the three years in the Mogao grottoes, he copied 276 mural paintings and founded a new school of painting based on ancient Buddhist art.
Sichuan Museum loaned the 60 paintings to Zhejiang Art Museum for the Dunhuang Art Exhibition that will last until March 16.
