Buildings demolished
Hangzhou authorities demolished 66 million square meters of illegal buildings in the past three years, equal to the size of 9,428 football fields, and cleaned up 38 million square meters of public spaces.
They began to tear down illegal houses in Mantoushan area last October and have renovated abandoned workshops and warehouses in the area to attract cultural and creative firms.
Mantoushan is one of the oldest residential quarters in Hangzhou, close to the ruins of the imperial palace of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).
The city authorities plan to remove 12 million square meters of illegal buildings this year.
