CPI hits new high

THE city's consumer price index, the main gauge of inflation, rose 5.5 percent year-on-year in July, the highest in 37 months, the Hangzhou Statistics Bureau said.

Among the items with the biggest price increases were airfares which hiked 20.7 percent from the previous month, pushing up travel costs during the summer peak season. Close on its heels, the price of traditional Chinese medicine jumped 20.4 percent above June's figure.

Hangzhou's CPI remains slightly below the national inflation rate that jumped 6.5 percent year-on-year in July, the highest growth rate in 37 months.

The price of food, which accounts for nearly one-third of the basket of goods in the CPI calculation, rose 14.8 percent from a year ago - up from June's 14.4 percent. Pork prices continued to climb with an annualized growth of 56.7 percent. But it moderated very slightly from June thanks to abating pork costs in the last week of July.

The CPI of Zhejiang Province rose 6.3 percent in July, 0.1 percentage point lower than June.
