CPI increases
THE local consumer price index, the main gauge of inflation, rose 4.4 percent from a year earlier in April, the Hangzhou Statistics Bureau said.
The CPI growth in the first four months reached 4.5 percent with food prices, the biggest constituent in the CPI basket, increasing 9.3 percent year-on-year in April, compared with 8.5 percent in March.
The city's CPI growth is slower than the provincial average of 5.2 percent and the national average of 5.3 percent.
To contain rising prices, China has lifted the benchmark interest rates twice this year, together with four reserve requirement ratio increases to soak up market liquidity.
