Campus foundations laid
Foundations for the Liangzhu campus of the China Academy of Art were laid in Yuhang District recently.
The Liangzhu campus of the China Academy of Art will open in 2020 with about 4,000 students. With a total investment of 900 million yuan (US$143 million), the campus sits next to the Liangzhu Station of Metro Line 2, covering an area of 32 hectares.
The branch of the academy will consist of schools for innovative design, research and continuous education and bases for high-level talent cultivation, experimental practice and innovation incubation.
Designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize judge Zhang Yonghe, all the buildings on the campus are connected on one surface.
So, apart from a stadium, the whole campus seems to have only one labyrinthine architecture.
Unlike most universities, the first floors of the buildings are workshops while the top floors are dormitories, and the rest functional areas are in between, said Zhang.
“After completion, the Liangzhu campus will break the barrier between learning and living, allowing studying to take place at any place on the campus, not just in classrooms,” the designer added.
